'Romance for violin and piano is a short reflective piece that exploits the lyrical qualities inherent in the combination. Originally written for a very young but talented violinist Romance travels through numerous moods andcolours within a continuous musical development of the opening material. At first gentle and reflective with increasing dramatic outbursts outlined by the violin sforzandi and parallel sixths in the piano writing numerous shortsolo passages in both instruments culminate in a fiery climax. Quickly subsiding into the calmer yet now more melancholy strains of the earlier stages of the piece the ending is somewhat incomplete. This seems to suggest acontinuous turn of events alluded to in the music.'???????????? - Helen GrimeBorn in 1981 Helen studied oboe with JohnAnderson and composition with Julian Anderson and Edwin Roxburgh at the Royal College of Music. She graduated from the BMus course with First Class Honours and completed her Masters with Distinction in 2004. From 2005-07 Helenwas a Legal & General Junior Fellow at the Royal College of Music. In 2003 she won a British Composer Award for her Oboe Concerto and was awarded the intercollegiate Theodore Holland Composition Prize in 2003 as well as allthe major composition prizes in the RCM. In 2008 she was awarded a Leonard Bernstein Fellowship to study at the Tanglewood Music Center where she studied with John Harbison Michael Gandolfi Shulamit Ran and Augusta Read Thomas.Helen has had works commissioned by some of the most established performers and organisations including ENO London Symphony Orchestra BCMG Britten Sinfonia BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Tanglewood Music Center.Conductors who have performed her work include Daniel Harding Oliver Knussen Pierre Boulez and Yan Pascal Tortelier. Alfred Mistowski was a pianist Violinist violist and composer who as a former student of Trinity College of Music in London became after studying at Oxford a professor at Trinity who appears to have been a champion of theTrinity Examination system. Mistowski composed many dramatic cantatas String quartets symphonies and concertos as well as a series of pieces to prepare Violin students for their exams. He travelled the world as a Trinityexaminer covering India South Africa Tasmania New Zealand Singapore and the Straits Islands. In addition he was music tutor to the Maharaja of Mysore and conductor of the Mysore Palace Orchestra. Perhaps his many seajourneys inspired this sprightly Hornpipe for Violin and Piano a perennial of the Trinity exam list.

Fantasia for Violin and Piano-Born in Erfurt the composer Edward Mollenhauer (1827 1914) achieved success in America as a soloist and teacher. His best-known pieces for young violinists are The Infant Paganini and The Boy Paganini.The Mollenhauer fantasia The Infant Paganini is a charming introduction to early virtuoso techniques. It calls for bowing techniques such as detaché legato spiccato and arpeggios over three strings. Players are also expected to play harmonics and pizzicato.This showpiece (BA 10691) can be accomplished by young violinists who can play in first to third position and who are nearing completion of theSassmannshaus Early Start on the Violin volume 4.The Boy Paganini is an impressive concert piece which is more demanding. Its two movements call for changes of metre harmonics and pizzicato. Viulusonaatti. Par KILPINEN YRJO. Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) is most known for his hundreds of lieds and song cycles. His instrumental compositions have been less know, ie. the six piano sonatas and suite for gamba and piano. Large-scale Sonata for violin and piano is dated in 1935 with opus number 87. The work was never finished, and National Library in Helsinki holds several sketches and versions in its Kilpinen collection. In 2015 violinist Frida Backman commissioned a completion of the Sonata from composer Walter Wolff. Wolff worked on the sketches and versions until 2018, when the work was completed and the Sonata premiered. The present publication is the first publication of the Sonata. The Sonatina In E Major For Violin And Piano (Op. 80) was composed in 1915 and first published in 1921. It is written in three movements: Lento - Allegro; Andantino; Lento - Allegretto - Vivace. Although it is one of the composer’s later works it is written in an early style and recalls his childhood memories. Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) was a violinist and composer of the Nationalist school. He remains the leading cultural icon of his native Finland having become the musical and artistic figurehead of the Finnish independence movement during his lifetime. He is best remembered for his symphonic poem Finlandia and alsohis seven symphonies.
